Scheduled Maintenance
Your vehicle is equipped with an onboard computer system that is always running tests on how your vehicle is operating. It’s measuring parameters like speed, engine temperature, load, air-fuel mixture and more, and is making adjustments to varying conditions. One of the most frustrating dashboard warning lights for vehicle owners is the Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon light. While it may seem daunting, this dashboard warning light is also very helpful. When the Check Engine Light comes on, it’s letting you know there’s a problem with engine performance, and more specifically the emissions. Most times, it’s a simple fix. If ignored, it can cause major engine damage.
Plain and simple, your vehicle is not running properly and is causing more pollution in the environment. It also means that your engine has to work harder to get you from Point A to Point B. Other than the light being on, you may not notice anything at first. If you don’t have the problem fixed, you may begin to notice definite symptoms like hard starting, rough idling or stalling. If you continue to ignore the problems, you will end up having to deal with some major engine repair, like replacing the catalytic converter. We are fairly certain you would rather deal with a simple repair right away than have to replace something as expensive as a catalytic converter.
Quite often, the Check Engine light comes on because of a loose or broken gas cap. The simplest way to correct that problem is to retighten or replace the gas cap (Tip: If replacing the gas cap, use one designed specifically for your vehicle). You will have to drive your vehicle for a few days (at least 50 miles) for the onboard diagnostic system to go through all its self-tests. If the gas cap was the problem, the light will turn off. If it stays on, we can perform computer diagnostic engine testing to find and correct the cause of the problem.
Remember, delaying a repair can lead to major repairs to components.
